Two years… it had been just over two years since that chance meeting on Earth. In all that time they'd only managed to see each other about a half-dozen times. But those times, each one was worth the wait. And the constant messages they sent between those times, everything they had been and had become to one another. Sam stared at the words hovering in front of him and blinked.
'We'll literally be worlds apart' was what she had said. This would put them farther apart than that. As hard as it had sometimes been, this was just too much to ask of anybody. He'd been selfish… he had known it the entire time. But it had just felt too good to let go of.
Maybe it was time.
Jay came onto the deck and Sam quickly slammed the PADD shut and turned away from him.
"Hey Sam, how… Sam? You alright?"
"Fine…" he managed. Part of the problem with living on a ship this size was that privacy was always at a premium.
Jay crossed the deck and grabbed his shoulder, forcing him to look at him, "Yeah right. What happened?"
Sam looked at him a moment and sighed, "The uh… the 202nd is being activated and being sent to Mars for special training."
He got up and walked away. Staring blankly at the wall he kept talking, "She won't be able to send any messages while they're there… and once they're done, the 202 is leaving Sol and probably won't be back."
Jay looked at him like he really should say something, but didn't know what, "Dude… that really sucks."
But Sam just shook his head slightly, "No, it's okay, really. We went into this thing knowing that something like this was probably going to happen."
Jay got up and walked over to him, "Sam… seriously, I'd never seen you happy before she came along. Oh, I thought I had, but… well…"
He clapped him on the shoulder and gave him a small shake, "I've gotten used to this guy and I'd like him to stick around."
Sam looked at him and sort of smiled, "Oh, I wouldn't worry about that. I mean, maybe we'll find each other again in the future, maybe we'll find someone else. Who knows what's around the next bend right?"
Jay laughed slightly at that, "Isn't that the truth."
