“Pardon me, Ma’am.” said the computer voice at Japan’s main earthquake monitoring facility just outside of Tokyo.

“Yes, AKAGI?” replied Yuki Tagagi.

“I have detected a Richter 8.4 earthquake in the Northwestern area of the United States, Ma’am.” said the computer in its unflappable calm voice.

“Where’s the epicenter?” Yuki asked.

“I am having a slight problem determining the exact location, Ma’am.” replied the computer. For the first time in its operational life AKAGI was getting data that made no sense to its known parameters.

“A slight problem? How deep is the epicenter?” Yuki asked, raising an eyebrow at the almost bewildered tone to AKAGI’s voice.

“That is the problem, Ma’am, the depth of the quake is at NEGATIVE 1 meter.” it replied.

“One meter ABOVE ground level, that’s impossible.” she replied now with a bewildered tone to her voice.

“Yes, Ma’am, with your permission I will contact my counterpart at the US Geological Service in Menlo Park, California to determine if they have an answer.” AKAGI replied.

“By all means.” she replied.

“Yes, Ma’am, wait one moment.” the computer said. Within moments it was back on line. “My counterpart reports there is nothing to be alarmed about, Ma’am.”

“That was an 8.4 and above ground level, how can there be nothing to be alarmed about?” Yuki asked incredulously.

“My counterpart reports that monitoring stations in the Northwestern US have determined that a citizen of an obscure village in that area was moving into a new residence and dropped the box containing his anvil collection. Nothing further to be concerned about, Ma’am.” replied the computer, once again in its customary calm voice.
